Nartmanstiftelsen has created a fan fiction version «full of humping and eroticism. I breathed a sigh of relief when the first thing that came into view under the folds of the green netting was a belching, twerking girl in leather, snakeskin and fringes. Everything is off-beat, all interaction is done with campy timing and motor skills. Especially the house music and strobe lights, where the dancers come up to us in the audience, stiffen and smile assertively, show the bold and unapologetic pride and authority that lies beneath.

Author and Flaubert expert A.S Byatt once wrote that Emma Bovary arouses the same kind of sympathy in the reader as an injured bird in the jaws of a cat, without anyone being able or willing to intervene.
MADAM is choreographer Henriette Pedersen and playwright P. Mercury’s twist on Madame Bovary by Gustav Flaubert. Flaubert’s Emma dreams away in romantic novels and gives in to extramarital desires. Pedersen and P. Mercury’s version is clearly sex-mad and uses sex as a drug. The text of P. Mercury takes obscure twists and turns and creates a drive and a rhythm worthy of Flaubert, but where in France you read Madam Bovary at school, this version would hardly have found a place in a cultural school bag.

Henriette Pedersen’s new project Madam contains everything I want to see more of in one and the same package: the comedy, the deep seriousness, the parody, the tragedies, the burlesque, the poetry, the whispers, the shouts, the music that takes it out in all directions and not least a work with body and voice that makes it clear where we are and why.

Henriette Pedersen has confused many over the years with her hybrid of theatre, visual arts and dance. In this work, too, there is an almost anarchic defiance towards the established conventions of the genre. The expression is too physical to pass as theatre, too chaotic and brutal to be choreographed and too schooled and thoroughly composed to be performance. In November 2024, Pedersen had the premiere of her latest performance «Dressur med stående tispe» at the Grusomhetens Teater.
